CARI-ON SVG - Giving Back Together with GlobalMedic

CARI-ON SVG volunteers with the humanitarian organization called GlobalMedic!

At CARI-ON SVG, we’re committed to disaster relief and community resilience, and we had the incredible opportunity to volunteer with GlobalMedic, a fellow humanitarian organization doing life-saving work around the world. Our team joined their efforts in packing relief supplies, contributing to their mission of getting the Right Aid to the Right People at the Right Time.

GlobalMedic, a Canadian charity, deploys highly trained volunteer teams to provide clean water, food, medical aid, and shelter to communities in need—quickly and effectively. From earthquakes to floods, their work is often the first lifeline for survivors in crisis zones.

During our time with them, we helped assemble relief kits, each one a symbol of hope for someone facing hardship. Beyond the hands-on work, it was a rewarding day of connection and shared purpose—we met volunteers from all walks of life, all united by a common goal: to support others.

We left feeling energized and inspired, and we highly encourage others to get involved with GlobalMedic’s incredible work!

Together, we carry on the mission of compassion and readiness—every helping hand makes a difference.

Toronto, ON – September 25, 2024

CARI-ON SVG Disaster Preparedness is proud to announce the successful delivery of $50,000 worth of disaster relief goods to St. Vincent and the Grenadines as part of ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Beryl. The shipment, which included essential food items, non-perishables, clothing, and larger goods like bathtubs, was delivered with the support of the Lion’s Clubs of South St. Vincent and Union Island, ensuring these supplies reached those in need.

We extend heartfelt thanks to the Toronto community, Consul General Fitzgerald Huggins, the SVGAT group, St. Vincent Support Group of Toronto, KLC Freight, and Arabesque Inc. CEO Aaron Crichton for their help with transportation and logistics. Special recognition goes to Janiel George, President of Lion’s Club Kingstown, and Margaret Wilson of Lion’s Club Union Island, for their leadership in receiving the shipment. Samantha Bailey played a key role in coordinating the delivery and ensuring smooth transportation of goods to Union Island.

This is the first of two shipments, with the second scheduled for dispatch on September 26, 2024. While we celebrate this milestone, the reconstruction process is far from over. We urgently need additional household goods, construction materials, and monetary donations to support long-term recovery.

A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated members of CARI-ON for their unwavering commitment.

Together, we stand united in helping St. Vincent and the Grenadines rebuild after Hurricane Beryl.

CARI-ON SVG POST VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS RELIEF & RECOVERY

CARI-ON SVG POST VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS RELIEF & RECOVERY

CARI-ON SVG Disaster Preparedness (CARI-ON) continues to champion charitable support for the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). The hardships resulting from the disaster are ongoing, according to reports coming out of SVG, therefore, CARI-ON is intentional in its efforts to actively participate in endeavours to continue seeking assistance for the people of SVG to help mitigate these harmful effects and work is ongoing with individuals and organisations to solicit donations.

CARI-ON continues to effectively manage the funds and other donations provided by our caring Canadian community, to alleviate the socio-economic baneful effects caused by the catastrophic violent eruptions of La Soufriere, April 2021.

CARI-ON’s most recent donations were the shipments of goods that have been shipped to the Ministry of Health and the Rotary Club.  In May, one 40 ft container including 20 skids hand sanitizers, 1 skid medical supplies and 2 medical trolleys for dialysis treatment. The goods were handed over on 26th May 2022 and valued over EC$200.000 00 (Two hundred thousand dollars). The medical equipment and supplies were donated through the initiative of Mr. Carlos Charles. 100 boxes of (COVID) Rapid Test Kits were received through solicitation of Mrs. Shelley John, Marketing Director of the SVG Tourism in Toronto and were to be delivered to the Ministry of Tourism. The total shipment of hand sanitizers amounted to 60 skids with each skid consisting of 108 boxes with 12 bottles in each box.

The shipment to the Rotary Club consisted of 9 wheelchairs and 5 walkers which are to be given to persons with disability.  The freight charges were borne by CARI-ON at a cost of US $4,860.00

Support for vulnerable families and individuals impacted by the volcanic eruptions continues. Our working partnership with the SVG Rotary Club South and CARI-ON is ongoing. And they will pay out to an additional 10 families, who have been identified as disadvantaged by the eruptions and are in dire need of financial and other support, a one-time payment of (EC$1,200.00.) Twelve hundred EC dollars.

In addition, bursary assistance from CARI-ON of $33,300.00 will be allotted to students who are economically disadvantaged and impacted by La Soufriere eruptions of April 2021. These students will be coming from 10 secondary schools per criteria and randomly. These schools are:

1. Bishop College Kingstown

2. Campden Park Secondary School

3. Georgetown Secondary School

4. North Union Secondary School

5. Petit Bordel Secondary School

6. Sandy Bay Secondary School

7. St. Martin Secondary School

8. Central Leeward Secondary School    (Barrouallie Secondary School)

9. St. Vincent Girls’ High School

10. St. Vincent Grammar School

CARI-ON will work with the SVG Rotary Club to provide funding to students impacted by the eruptions of La Soufriere in the lower income bracket, transitioning from secondary, into tertiary education, for the first year of college life.

Reports coming out of St. Vincent from reliable sources to CARI-ON indicate that many families are struggling to meet their financial needs. Hence, many are unable to finance their children's education. It has been identified that there are financial companies and other organisations currently providing scholarships, grants and other financial assistance for students who have successfully completed their first year college education and are moving into their second year of Tertiary Education.  However, there is a gap created for disadvantaged students wishing to enter college in the first year from secondary education and thus may need to opt out of school. By providing funding specifically for this group, we create an avenue by which students can have access to college education and align themselves to benefit from funding in their second year. Thereby bridging the gap.

Funding will be primarily focused on each student procuring uniforms and necessary books as upfront costs. Additionally, monthly stipends to cover transportation and meals will be distributed periodically. Funding will be primarily focused on each student procuring uniforms, some books and as upfront costs (registration). Additionally, monthly stipends to assist with transportation.

CARI-ON will continue to work with the Diaspora community and in particular the

Canadian out-reach in its endeavours to support the people of SVG. We are able to do what we have done because our communities have been out-pouring in generosity and goodwill. Working together we can do more to support our brothers and sisters on our beautiful island.

Best Regards,

May 6th, 2021 Update

THANK YOU

In addition to the Sunwing air shipment of emergency supplies, CARI-ON has packed and shipped 7x40ft containers to SVG, with two more containers currently being organized. Our sincerest thanks goes out to our partners - KLC Shipping, GlobalMedic, Toronto SVG Support Group, and SVGAT, as well as the donation centres - New Haven Funeral Home, Faith Ministries, and Morning Start Christian Fellowship. Our gratitude is also extended to all of the volunteers who have worked so tirelessly to coordinate the efforts so far.

Of course, this incredible response would not have been possible without the vital support and compassionate hearts of you all, and for this, we and the people of St Vincent and Grenadines thank you. With the added complication of heavy rains, it will be a long road of recovery for our country. But we are confident that together, St Vincent and the Grenadines will rise from the ashes as a strong united nation.

Due to the massive global response to the immediate supply needs, we are no longer accepting donations of food, water, or diapers. We also kindly advise that monetary donations, which can assist in the rebuilding of the economy of SVG, will make the greatest impact at this time.
